University of Sydney, NSW, Australia

Tanya Golubchik is a computational biologist and senior lecturer in computational microbiology at the University of Sydney. She was previously at the Big Data Institute, University of Oxford, and was a member of the COVID-19 Genomics UK Consortium. Her research uses modern sequencing technologies to explore how bacteria and viruses evolve within their host, how new variants arise and spread, and how we can reliably detect, monitor and combat the associated risks to human health. She has led studies on within-host evolution and transmission of bacterial pathogens such as Staphylococcus aureus, and viruses including HIV and SARS-CoV-2, as well as developing novel analysis strategies for multi-target diagnostics. In 2020-21 she led the SARS-CoV-2 genome sequence analysis efforts at the Big Data Institute, quantifying minority viral populations to track variant emergence, and working together with the Oxford Vaccine Group on SARS-CoV-2 genomics in vaccine trials.
